College of Nursing

The dual degree option is available to students currently enrolled in a community college program with an ETSU College of Nursing articulation agreement. Students enrolled in this option begin work on their Bachelor's degree program while simultaneously enrolled in their Associate degree Nursing program. The program is offered each summer and consists of Health Assessment, Pathophysiology, and Pharmacology. (Transfer credit may be granted for pharmacology and pathophysiology)

Students are admitted to a specific program location and may not switch or mix locations without special permission.

Kingsport BSN enrollment is by permit only. If you are a Kingsport BSN student needing a permit for a course, please contact Scott Vaughn ().

Program Details

Admissions Criteria
 
  • Must be enrolled in an accredited Associate nursing degree program Which has a dual-degree articulation agreement with ETSU College of Nursing.
  • Must be fully admitted to ETSU prior to classes starting. A delay in applying to the university may delay acceptance into the dual-degree program.
  • Must make a separate application to the College of Nursing by the deadline date and present a minimum 2.60 college grade point average (GPA), on all college-level course work.  Developmental studies grades/quality points will not be used in the calculation of the GPA for admission purposes.
  • Must have earned a minimum grade of "C" (2.0) in each required math, science, health science and nursing course. No more than two science/health science courses may have been repeated, and only one science/health science course may have been repeated more than once in order to achieve a minimum grade of "C" (2.0).
Out of State Applications

Course and program availability varies by state and is established by each individual state’s Board of Nursing; therefore, admission to ETSU CON online RN to BSN Program cannot be guaranteed to all applicants.

ETSU College of Nursing RN to BSN Program is not accepting applications from residents in the following states due to current requirements or restrictions imposed on distance education programs by their board of education or board of nursing:

  • California
  • Florida
  • Kentucky
  • Massachusetts
  • Nevada
  • New Jersey
  • New York
  • North Dakota
  • Oregon
  • Utah
  • Washington
  • U.S. Territories
  • Canadian Provinces

Students who reside outside the state of Tennessee who are considering an on-line nursing program should contact the appropriate board of nursing in the state of residency to confirm whether the course or program meets requirements for online degree programs prior to beginning a course of study. 

If the student moves from the state of Tennessee after admission to the program, continuation in the program will depend on the availability of the program within the new state where the student is physically present.

It is the student’s responsibility to notify ETSU College of Nursing of a change in physical residence.

Application Process & Selection

There are 2 applications to the program:

  1. Apply to the ETSU, click here.
    • Please apply as a Transfer Student and select Pre-Nursing (Pre-BSN) for the major.
    • Request ALL college and university transcripts, and high school transcript (if you graduated High School Fall 1989 or after) be sent to ETSU. It is the student’s responsibility to follow up with the Admissions Office regarding university acceptance (423-439-4213).
    • If you have been accepted at ETSU previously, please complete the online Re-admit Form to the university and request all official updated transcripts be sent to ETSU. No Re-Admission fee required.
  2. Complete the Dual Degree Pre-Assessment Application Form and scan it to Matt Johnson,

    You can apply to ETSU and complete the Dual Degree Pre-Assessment Application in the same time frame. The College of Nursing will accept Dual Degree applications for the Summer semester (refer to deadline). Admitted students will be classified as Pre-BSN students until they are accepted into the program. The College of Nursing will change the status to BSN when accepted.

    To receive full consideration, students must be fully admitted to East Tennessee State University by the nursing application deadline dates. Since admission to the university can take several weeks, students are encouraged to apply well in advance of the nursing deadlines. Consideration for the pre-nursing major cannot be guaranteed if full admission to the university has not been obtained.

Semester Deadlines to Apply:

  • Summer – April 15

Transfer of Nursing College credits: All nursing courses, in which a grade of “C” (2.0) or higher was earned, will be transferred in as nursing electives. Nursing courses, in which a grade of “C-“ or less was earned, are considered nursing failures. Please contact the Office of Student Services regarding the nursing failure policies and procedures.


Selection Process:

  • Eligible Dual Degree students will be admitted for the Summer semester
  • Eligible applicants will be rank ordered by college level grade point average; admission will be offered to the top ranked applicants and may be limited by space availability. Applications received after the deadline will be considered on a space available basis.
  • Eligible applicants who are not admitted must re-apply.

Admission points breakdown:

OVERALL GPA* - 100 Points Available

  • GPA 3.8 to 4.0 = 100 Admissions Points
  • GPA 3.6 to 3.79 = 90 Admissions Points
  • GPA 3.4 to 3.59 = 80 Admissions Points
  • GPA 3.2 to 3.39 = 70 Admissions Points
  • GPA 3.0 to 3.19 = 60 Admissions Points
  • GPA 2.8 to 2.99 = 50 Admissions Points
  • GPA 2.6 to 2.79 = 40 Admissions Points
  • GPA of less than 2.6 = 0 points

Math-Science Requirements GPA** - 100 Points Available

  • GPA 3.8 to 4.0 = 100 Admissions Points

Also required:

General Education will be required to graduate from ETSU with the BSN Degree.

**NOTE (2): Students who enroll in and successfully complete CSCI 1100/INFS 1010 will receive college credit. College credits are not awarded for the proficiency exam.

Yes!


What happens after I apply?

You should expect to receive an email indicating your status to the Dual Degree track. Students are allowed to take Dual Degree nursing courses ONLY during the summer semester. After you are accepted into the program you will receive a packet from the Office of Student Services.


What is the tuition cost?

Tuition cost is determined each fall semester for the following summer (available upon request).


After I complete the Associate RN Program, am I required to re-apply to ETSU or NursingCAS?

No. If a student is not active for one or more semesters he/she must re-admit to ETSU, then contact the RN-BSN advisor. These students are not required to pay the admission fee again.

Note: Students are responsible for submitting all updated transcripts to ETSU Admissions following completion of the Associate RN Program. Failure to submit their transcripts could prevent registration and graduation from ETSU.

Please note that the method for receiving applications to Traditional, LPN-BSN, and Accelerated programs has changed. We have moved to a Centralized Application Service that is available nationally to nursing programs and which is sponsored by our accrediting agency. The cost to apply is $45. Please read the Nursing CAS Application Instructions very carefully BEFORE you click the link to apply to our program.

NOTE: Because of state regulatory requirements for nursing programs, students residing outside the state of Tennessee may be required to complete clinical hours in a Tennessee institution or agency.
