BSW Cohorts
General Information
BSW Cohort Information
Cohort Model
The cohort design provides an opportunity to complete the major requirements of the BSW degree in a convenient off-campus setting. The timing and format of courses are ideal for busy students who may not be able to complete the degree in a traditional way. Students entering the two-year, distance education program can expect to receive the identical education that students normally experience on the main campus. An assigned faculty advisor meets with each student every semester.
University Admission
Students applying to distance education cohort programs are selected using the same
criteria established and used for students on the Johnson City campus. Students must
apply for admission to ETSU and declare social work as the major. A nonrefundable
application fee of $25.00 along with an official transcript from every college or
university where you have previously taken classes is expected.
For complete admission requirements, guidelines, and to apply online, please visit
the ETSU Admissions webpage at https://www.etsu.edu/admissions/
Additionally, students interested in a cohort program should contact the BSW program
to express interest in the cohort. Cohort students must have completed the majority
of general education courses and specific prerequisite courses outlined in the curriculum
section below.
Program Admission
Social work is a professional program of education and training and therefore requires admission into the program. This second level of admission takes place during the semester students are enrolled in SOWK 3000 Human Behavior. This will be during the first semester in the cohort. The applications are due by October 1st. Admission to the program is required before students are permitted to take upper-level practice courses. See the Admissions Requirements for more information.
Curriculum
The plan of study will consist of a total of 48 credit hours. Classes will be a combination
of in class meetings and online. Generally, students will meet two days a week for
classes and have other courses online. During the last two semesters students will
complete a field placement which will involve working for an agency approximately
16 hours a week.
This plan of study is designed for students that have completed the majority of general
education course requirements for the bachelor's degree and are at junior-level status.
