Biological Sciences
Welcome to the Department of Biological Sciences
Welcome to Biology at ETSU! Our department has broad expertise across disciplines in Molecular & Cellular Biology and Ecology, Evolution & Behavior. We come from all over the world and conduct research in diverse study systems, from cells to ecosystems, proteins to communities, bacteria to mammals. We use cutting edge techniques such as advanced imaging, genome editing, and computational approaches alongside field and laboratory experiments. This provides many training opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students in research, teaching, and professional development.
The Department of Biological Sciences is part of ETSU's School of Science, Engineering, and Math.

Congratulations to Skylar Mathieson, the winner of 2024 3MT. We're proud of you!
Skylar Mathieson, a graduate student of Biological Sciences department won East Tennessee State University’s 3 Minutes Thesis Competition (3MT®)
“Bees encounter all kinds of chemical compounds in the nectar and pollen of flowers. Some of these compounds are good for the bees, while others we aren't so sure,” Mathieson said regarding her thesis.
“My research is exploring the potential for pollinators to develop a chemical dependency to some of the compounds that we know are addictive to other animals, like caffeine and nicotine, that the pollinators encounter in the flowers of some plant species. Ultimately, I want to know whether plants might be drugging their pollinators.”
