Biology

There's more than one way to get a biology degree at ETSU. As a matter of fact, there are six!

All biology concentrations share a common core that includes two years of biology classes, one year of general chemistry and physics, two math courses, a general education core, and a diverse array of guided electives at the junior and senior level. From there, the paths diverge.

Summary of Concentrations

• Biology Concentration

  The standard concentration, also the most popular, includes a core in the natural sciences and mathematics to prepare you for a broad range of specialized upper level classes. These electives give you the freedom to tailor your degree for any number of careers in biology or for graduate and/or professional school application.

• Interdisciplinary Biology Concentration

  The standard concentration with a minor allows you to adopt a secondary area of study by replacing 14 hours of upper-level biology courses with a minor program of study.

• Biochemistry Concentration

  The biochemistry concentration focuses in on molecular and cellular biology courses and, like the standard concentration, does not require the completion of a minor.

• Biomedical Sciences Concentration

  The Department of Biological Sciences offers a major in biology leading to the Bachelor of Science degree. The major is designed for students who plan to enter such professions as biology, biochemistry, science education, medicine, veterinary medicine, agriculture, conservation, and industry. Some of our courses may be appropriate for students in other fields of study who desire to acquaint themselves with the phenomena of living organisms. The department offers the Master of Science in biology, and participates in the PhD in Biomedical Sciences through the Quillen College of Medicine. • Natural Resources Ecology Concentration

  Natural resources ecology is a broad, modern field of science that combines the study of interactions among living organisms and their environment with management practices.  The natural world provides critical resources and benefits to human society with a global estimated value of ecosystem services in the tens of trillions of dollars annually.

• Secondary Education Concentration

  The secondary education concentration includes a minor in secondary ed and prepares students for licensure to teach 7-12 grades.

  All students pursuing the secondary education concentration must also be advised in the College of Education to prepare for boarding and licensure. Please contact Joel Tramel to schedule an advisement meeting.

Geosciences

Geosciences is the study of the Earth in all its complexities, from the investigation of minerals and rocks, natural resources, evolution of plants and animals, climate change, natural hazards caused by earthquakes, horrendous weather, or careless human engineering, to the tools of geospatial science used to map out and visually portray our land. This major is only offered in a Bachelor of Science, and a minor is not required.

There are four concentrations within the Geosciences major:

• Geospatial Science Concentration
• Paleontology Concentration
• Geology and Environment Concentration
• Geography Concentration

Math

This major is only offered in a Bachelor of Science, and a minor is not required. There are four concentrations within the Mathematics major. These include:

• Mathematics Education Concentration: Students planning to teach mathematics at the secondary level should choose this concentration. In addition, such students must complete professional education requirements for secondary education students.
• Mathematical Statistics Concentration: Students planning to pursue careers in industry or a field that utilizes statistics should choose this concentration.
• Computational Applied Mathematics Concentration: Students desiring a job in research or in industry utilizing areas of mathematics other than statistics should choose this concentration.
• Mathematical Science Concentration: Students intending to pursue a graduate degree in mathematics should choose this concentration.

Physics

Physics is the study of the properties of matter, energy, radiation, and their interactions. This major is only offered in a Bachelor of Science and requires a minor. Learn more about the program by visiting the website of the Department of Physics and Astronomy.
