Appalachia to Dessau
Letters of a Tank Commander in World War II
ETSU's Archives of Appalachia hosted author Sandy Laws for a book talk and signing at 6 p.m. on March 6. The signing was based on Laws’ recently-published book Appalachia to Dessau: Letters of a Tank Commander in World War II. The talk drew from hundreds of surviving letters of the late John Goodin, an Army tank commander from Erwin, Tennessee, who fought in World War II from 1941 until 1945. These uncensored and emotional letters followed Goodin's transformation from a rookie soldier leaving home and country for the first time to a seasoned and celebrated veteran.
