Mathematics & Statistics
ETSU's mathematics and statistics department is one of the oldest departments still standing on campus. Undergraduate students have the opportunity to focus on four major concentrations: Mathematics Teacher Education, Mathematical Sciences, Computational Applied Mathematics, and Statistics. Students can also minor in mathematics or statistics. These minors complement other majors like Biology, Computing, Marketing, Physics, and more. Graduate students have the opportunity to seek an M.S. in either Mathematic Sciences or Applied Data Science.

Department Centennial!
The ETSU Mathematics & Statistics Department is celebrating 100 years! The East Tennessee State Normal School was founded in 1911 under President Sidney Gilbreath. In the advent of the university’s official accreditation in 1926, the Mathematics and Physical Sciences Department was created as a distinct department. Today, the department is known as the Mathematics & Statistics Department, hosting 4 undergraduate concentrations and 2 graduate concentrations. A monument for the department’s centennial sits outside of the newly renovated Mayetta Carter Hall as of Fall 2026!
