Kirsty is a junior in our department studying journalism with a minor in psychology. An international student from Ireland, she also plays on the ETSU women’s soccer team. Kirsty has gained journalism experience while studying with us by being a features writer on the East Tennessean staff and working on the Overlooked in Appalachia project. She also recently won third-place for Online Specialized/Topic Reporting for her work on Overlooked in Appalachia in the 2019 Tennessee Associated Press Broadcasters and Media Editors College Contest.
“I feel prepared with a variety of skills and knowledge that will help me in the future,” Kirsty said. “There are a lot of practical assignments that provide good practice and experience for what the industry will be like. I have met many great people in this department from professors to other students. Overall I have been very impressed.”
After graduation, Kirsty is interested in everything from feature writing and travel
writing/cinematography to writing novels/scripts and even acting.
“I am drawn to storytelling – be it real life or fictional,” she said. “Some of my
biggest goals are to have a book published, make a documentary and be involved in
a movie or TV show."
