Dr. William G. Linebarger
Greeneville native Dr. William Linebarger came to ETSU on a football scholarship and helped lead the Buccaneers to become the 1969 Mid-East Regional and Grantland Rice Bowl champions.
Named the ETSU Distinguished Military Student/Distinguished Military Graduate for 1972, Linebarger next studied in Memphis at the College of Dentistry at the University of Tennessee Center for Health Sciences.
Once he had earned his D.D.S. degree, Linebarger entered the United States Army Dental Corps and, after basic training, he was stationed at Ft. Polk, La. A spinal cord injury led to a long stay at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C., and to a medical retirement from the Army.
While undergoing rehabilitation at the Veterans Administration Medical Center, Linebarger joined the faculty of the University of Tennessee College of Dentistry.
In 1981, Linebarger entered a residency program at the University of North Carolina School of Dentistry and graduated with a master’s degree and a specialty certificate in endodontics. He returned to Johnson City to open his private endodontic practice in 1984.
