Counseling
The Counseling Program prepares highly skilled practitioners to work in a wide range of professional settings. Our counseling program was the awarded the 2019 Robert Frank Outstanding Counselor Education Program Award by the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (ACES). The Master's degree in counseling has two concentrations: Clinical Mental Health and School Counseling.
The ETSU Clinical Mental Health counseling concentration prepares students for licensure as a professional counselor with the mental health service provider designation (LPC-MHSP) in the state of Tennessee. The ETSU counseling program is CACREP accredited which provides an educational experience that exceeds state of Tennessee requirements and allows for easier transition to licensure in other states. Additionally, students can talk with their faculty advisors about planning a program of study that meets pre-licensure requirements in other states.
The ETSU School Counseling concentration is approved by the state of Tennessee and is CACREP accredited. Licensure paperwork and tests can all be completed within ETSU’s College of Health Sciences and all program graduates will be prepared to be licensed to counsel in grades Pre K-12.
In addition, for students wishing to specialize their training in College Counseling/Student Affairs Higher Education and/or Couples and Family Therapy, we offer courses that can be taken as electives as part of the School or Clinical Mental Health programs of study. Students who are interested in licensure in Tennessee as a Marriage and Family therapist (LMFT) can work with their advisor to complete coursework and clinical experiences that may lead to licensure as both an LPC-MHSP and an LMFT.
The Counseling Program faculty and students embrace professional identities as counselors. As such, we emphasize a focus on the promotion of mental health, wellness, and development to improve the human condition and affirm the unique identities of clients. We promote a heightened awareness of a multicultural and diverse world. We place high value on the therapeutic relationship and integration of clients' strengths and resources into the counseling process.
