Versatility in Context: Expanding Skills to Serve Others
Individual, Family & Community Sciences is a broadly defined field with an interdisciplinary knowledge base, focused on prevention and remediation to uniquely promote various ways to meet human needs. The core curriculum, internship, and capstone experience provide enhanced competence and advanced qualifications grounded in best practice and directed toward success in the helping professions. Graduates may obtain promotions and positions in leadership of human service programs, administration of nonprofits, staff training, grant writing, team leader, program development and coordination, family support, operational management, marketing and public relations, research and program evaluation, advocacy and community organizing, advancement and fundraising, and expanding number of roles with private, public, voluntary, international, and nonprofit organizations.
Mission Statement: The mission of the Individual, Family & Community Sciences program is to prepare knowledgeable, skilled, critically conscious and ethical family science scholars and professionals in their understanding and appreciation of the diversity and complexity of individuals and families and their communities.
The Future of the Helping Professions
The world is changing, growing more diverse and complex. There is a need for a variety of helping professionals. Governments are privatizing, and the resulting human service organizations create units and positions with versatile functions and transformative response. While our practitioners will work for the public, they will also serve foundations and for-profit purposes.
