Welcome to the East Tennessee State University Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) Program
Our BSW Program is nestled in the southern Appalachian mountains bordering North Carolina and Virginia. We view ourselves as a regional program collaborating with community members and service providers in northeast Tennessee, western North Carolina and southwest Virginia. The demographics of both our faculty and students are representative of this culturally rich geographic region.
Accredited since 1974 by the Council on Social Work Education, our program provides opportunities for students to acquire knowledge for better understanding of human behavior in the environment, social welfare policy, practice methods and research skills necessary for successful interventions with individuals, families, groups, organizations and communities. Through examination of evidence-based practices, students will develop critical thinking skills required for exploring complex social problems.
Social work may be the profession for you if you have an interest in addressing social injustice, oppression, the plight of economically disadvantaged and at-risk populations. As an undergraduate generalist program, our goal is to build on a liberal arts foundation and equip students with the skills and knowledge for either an entry level professional position in a social agency, or further study at the graduate level.
I invite you to enroll in our Introduction to Social Work course to experience and acquaint yourself with the social work profession. If you find yourself thinking you have found your niche, feel free to contact any faculty member in the BSW program to discuss your interests. In addition to classes on campus we now offer the BSW program in a cohort format in Sevierville. This format is designed to meet the needs of students across the region.
