M.Ed. in Reading 

Everyone admitted to the program seeks an M.Ed. in Reading. Candidates also have the opportunity to earn the PreK-12 Reading Specialist Endorsement. Candidates also select a path that leads to  the PreK-12 English as a Second Language Endorsement OR the Special Education Interventionist, K-8/6-12 license. The Masters in Reading degree is designed to provide the necessary educational experiences for persons interested in:

• working with children or adults,
• assuming leadership roles in reading education,
• becoming a reading supervisor,
• teaching students during response to intervention,
• serving as a reading tutor,
• coordinating a reading program, or
• supervising reading programs.

Program Information

Adding Endorsements

To add the Reading Specialist Endorsement, graduates must:

• Hold a valid teaching license,
• Successfully pass the designated coursework,
• Pass the TN required Praxis exams for Reading Specialists, and
• Have 2 years of teaching experience.

To add the PreK-12 ESL Endorsement, graduates must:

• Hold a valid teaching license,
• Successfully pass the designated coursework, and
• Pass the TN Required Praxis exams for PreK-12 ESL Endorsement.

To add the Special Education Interventionist K-8/6-12 License, graduates must: 

• Hold a valid teaching license,
• Successfully pass the designated coursework, and
• Pass the TN Required Praxis exams for Special Education Interventionist K-8/6-12.
