This program offers a terminal professional degree for those who want to further their career as an advanced practice nurse focusing on healthcare needs of specific populations.

Specialize Your Studies
The ETSU-TTU DNP Program, commonly referred to as the Joint DNP Program, is a unique program developed through a long-standing partnership with Tennessee Tech University (TTU). By partnering together, student can study a wider range of specialty concentrations and collaborate with expert faculty. Classes are small enough for individual attention, but students have all the resources of two regional universities. The ETSU College of Nursing and TTU School of Nursing Joint Program currently offers six concentrations within the degree.

Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner
The focus of this concentration is to provide healthcare, from adolescence to older adults, in hospitals and clinic settings. There is an emphasis on management of clients across acute care settings in collaboration with other members of the healthcare team.
Graduates are eligible for the Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner national certification examination.

Nursing and Healthcare Leadership
This concentration prepares the advanced nurse for multidimensional leadership within today’s complex healthcare system. Coursework focuses on fiscal management, quality indicators, risk management, information technology, and health care policy.

Family Nurse Practitioner
The focus of this concentration is patient centered quality care. This includes common and acute illnesses while emphasizing quality of care and health outcomes. The patient population for this specialization spans the lifespan. The Family Nurse Practitioner works in collaboration with other members of the healthcare team.

Pediatric Nurse Practitioner - Primary Care
This concentration focuses on is patient-centered quality care, including common and acute illnesses, while emphasizing quality of care and health outcomes. The patient population is children of all ages. The Pediatric Nurse Practitioner works in collaboration with other members of the healthcare team.

Psychiatric/Mental Health Nurse Practitioner
This concentration prepare advanced practice nurses to provide comprehensive psychiatric-mental health care across the life span to individuals, groups, and families in diverse settings. In a word—excellent! According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, nurse practitioner employment is expected to grow much faster than the average for all occupations. The job prospects for nurse leaders in all areas is also growing much faster than the average for all occupations. Graduate level prepared nurse leaders are needed in every area of nursing.

Does a student's undergraduate degree have to be related to this field?
A bachelor’s degree in nursing and an unencumbered license as a Registered Nurse is required. A list of full requirements can be found in the academic catalog.

The GRE is not required.

Are the courses for this program asynchronous or synchronous?
The program is labeled as a blended program, meaning that there are some synchronous activities but most are asynchronous. Some courses may require periodic online meetings. Some of the nurse practitioner concentrations have skills lab opportunities or requirements which will be learned through clinical hours that are completed in-person in the student’s area.

What percentage of synchronous courses should a student expect?
Students in the program are required to attend program intensives (currently online Zoom meetings) at the beginning of the semester twice a year (May and August). The intensives incorporate orientation, first-day class meetings, educational/informational meetings to help with studying, professional development, and networking. These meetings vary from 2-4 days.

Does the department help with clinical placement and locating preceptors?
Yes! Students know their home, surroundings, and personal needs better than anyone and may know or have a relationship with clinical sites and potential preceptors. ETSU and TTU also have a wide range of existing agreements with clinical sites and preceptors. They work closely with students to find the best fit for their concentration.

Is this program designed to meet the needs of adults who work full-time and/or have family obligations?
There are full time and part time study plans to meet student needs. Adding school to an already busy schedule is a challenge and takes dedication to carving out time for study and clinical. The online nature of the program makes it ideal for the working professional and those with familial obligations.
