The online Reading, M.Ed. program is designed to provide the necessary educational experiences for those wanting to work toward enhancing the reading, writing, and oral language competencies of children and adults. This graduate program meets standards of excellence for reading programs of the International Reading Association.

This stackable program offers a pathway to specialized credentials and professional growth in Literacy, English as a Second Language, and Special Education. This program is for any professional who is interested in increasing their expertise in literacy. Candidates who successfully complete the program walk away with in-depth knowledge of high-quality instructional materials, comprehensive literacy and language assessment, and individualized learning approaches to support diverse populations.
Additionally, educators who successfully complete the program, have at least 2 years of teaching experience, hold a Tennessee teaching license, and complete the Praxis requirement can earn a Reading Specialist Endorsement from the state of Tennessee. Out of state applicants should consult with their state Department of Education for additional licensure requirements.
This degree is not an initial licensure program. Those seeking an initial endorsement to teach in Tennessee should enter one of the initial licensure programs. Reading Specialist graduate certificate also available.

Anyone with a bachelor's degree can enroll in this program. However, those seeking an additional teaching endorsement must already have their initial teaching license in order to be recommended for it.

What are the admissions requirements?
Those seeking admission must meet the general admission requirements for the Graduate School. In addition, applicants should:
- have an undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or above on a 4.0 scale and
- provide a current résumé.

Are the courses for this program asynchronous or synchronous?
Courses are asynchronous. However, the practicum requires students to work with educators in their local schools.

Does this program require a thesis?
Students may choose to complete a thesis, but a thesis is not required.

What is the time to completion?
Full-time students can complete the program in two years by taking 9 credit hours (3 courses) each fall and spring semester. Part-time students have the flexibility to take courses at their own pace, but all degree requirements must be completed within six years of starting the program.

There are 20 spaces in each cohort.
