Course Description
Algebra II emphasizes linear and quadratic expressions, equations, and functions. This course also introduces students to polynomial, rational and exponential functions. Students explore the structures of and interpret functions and other mathematical models. Students build upon previous knowledge of equations and inequalities to reason, solve, and represent equations and inequalities numerically and graphically.
Tennessee State Curriculum Standards
University School’s Algebra II course is aligned to the Tennessee State Standards for Mathematics.
Required Materials
- Notebook paper
- Pencils
- Graphing Calculator (see below)
Calculator
We will use calculators throughout this course for both in-class assignments/activities and homework. The calculator I will be teaching with is the Texas Instruments TI-83 or 84. The 84 is what the stores are currently carrying and they are very expensive. If you can find an 83 on ebay or from a friend, etc., it will be everything you will need through high school and college. If you choose a different model calculator, you will be responsible for figuring out how to use it. This calculator will be allowed on many assessments in this class, and it is approved for use on the End of Course mathematics exams in Tennessee and the ACT Exam.
Resources
Textbook: Algebra II, published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt
Video: The textbook contains scannable QR codes for each section. Khanacademy.org also contains valuable tutorial videos.
Extra Help
Students may come for Math Lab help during their study hall time. Algebra II Math Lab times and locations will be announced soon.
Grading Policy
Grades are calculated using total points. Rubrics will be used for projects and group assignments. These will be provided to the student when the assignment is given. The following grading scale will be used for this class:
Grading Scale
A 93 – 100% B 85-92% C 75-84% D 70-74% F 69% and lower
Make-up Policy
Refer to the Student Handbook. University School policy will be followed.
Attendance
All absences and tardies will be documented and reported to the administration according to the policies outlined in the student handbook. I expect students to make attendance a priority. If you are not present, you miss out on valuable learning opportunities and end up playing “catch-up.” The simplest solution is to attend class and be on time.
Class Rules
- Bring all needed materials to class (textbook, notebook, pencil, calculator).
- Be in your seat and ready to begin when the bell rings.
- Clean up after yourself. Put classroom materials back where they belong, throw away your trash, and take all of your belongings with you when you leave.
- Remain in your seats at the end of class until dismissed by the teacher.
- Keep all electronic devices (including phones) off and out of sight.
- Respect peers and teacher, and their property.
- Follow all school rules.
Cell Phones
All phones will be turned off and deposited into an assigned pocket in the front of the room as you come into class. If your phone goes off during class, I will hang onto it until the end of the school day. Please discuss with me if you have extenuating circumstances (such as a medical condition).
