These courses are also available to all ETSU students. Students must have completed the first-year composition courses (ENGL 1010 and 1020 or their equivalents) as prerequisites for the courses listed below.
Poetry
ENGL 3010
Prerequisites: ENGL 1020. Study of poetry as a genre with attention to its form and
techniques. Reading and analysis of poems written by acknowledged masters of the genre.
Fiction
ENGL 3020
Prerequisites: ENGL 1020. Course focuses on fiction as genre, with emphasis on technique
and form in fiction, such as style and point of view. Readings include masters of
both the short story and novel.
Creative Writing I Poetry
ENGL 3141
Prerequisites: ENGL 1020 or equivalent; and one 2000-level literature course. An introduction
to creative expression in poetry. Emphasis on student work, as well as the work of
established writers.
Creative Writing I Fiction
ENGL 3142
Prerequisites: ENGL 1020 or equivalent; and one 2000-level literature course. An introduction
to creative expression in fiction. Emphasis on student work, as well as the work of
established writers.
Creative Writing II Fiction
ENGL 4907/5907
Prerequisites: ENGL 3142 or permission of the instructor. Advanced course in writing
fiction. Considerable attention to craft and form of stories written by acknowledged
masters of genre.
Creative Writing II Poetry
ENGL 4917/5917
Prerequisites: ENGL 3141 or permission of the instructor. Advanced course in writing
poetry. Considerable attention to craft and form of poems written by acknowledged
masters of genre.
Creative Writing Capstone
ENGL 4930
Prerequisites: ENGL 3141 and ENGL 3142. Capstone experience for students in the Creative
Writing minor. Emphasis on literary publishing, copy editing and developing a portfolio
of professional writing.
