The core courses offered by the Department of Language and Literature as part of the Film and Media Studies Minor are listed below.
These courses are also available to all ETSU students. Students must have completed the first-year composition courses (ENGL 1010 and 1020 or their equivalents) as prerequisites for the courses listed below. Additionally, FILM 3000 is a pre-req for FILM 4000.
All FILM courses count towards the 3000/4000-level requirements for the ENGL major.

Note: the online rotation is offered regularly so that the minor may be completed online in a two-year cycle. Electives to satisfy the credit requirement are also offered regularly each semester. If a student wishes to complete the program fully online, they should advise regularly with one of the directors of Film and Media Studies to ensure they enroll in the online classes when offered.

Introduction to the study of film through classics of the global film canon.
Methods in Film Studies
FILM 3000 (formerly ENGL 3290)
Introduces core concepts of film analysis, considering cinema as an institution that
comprises an industrial system of production, social and aesthetic norms and codes,
and particular modes of reception.
Rise of the Moving Image
FILM 3100
The histories and industries of film from around the world until WWII.
Post-War Global Film
FILM 3200
Traditions in filmmaking that emerged after WWII.
Film Criticism
Film 4000 (formerly ENGL 4320)
Explores various critical approaches to film, from neorealism to feminist film theory.
Pre-req: FILM 3000
Film Genres
FILM 4100 (formerly ENGL 4290)
A genre approach, including but not limited to comedy, Western, film noir, and documentary.

include video essay production, women in film, film festivals, and film archives.
