As a full professor in a PhD granting Experimental Psychology program, I specialize
in research methodology, evaluation design, instrument selection, and I love mentoring
students in research. I spend much of my professional and personal time trying mobilize
the faith community to address addiction through my work with the Uplift Appalachia, and a colleague and I have taught about adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and
trauma informed care to thousands of individuals since 2015. I am Associate Director
of Research Design and Implementation in the ETSU established the ETSU/Ballad Health Strong BRAIN Institute, which has a mission to conduct research, develop resources, and transform organizations
to reduce ACEs and their effects. Much of my research has been in the area of religion/health
connections, and I have published in the areas of religiosity, health, and substance
abuse.
Our areas of research include the intersection of religiosity and health, particularly
focusing on addiction. Adversity, particularly early adversity (often called trauma)
is strongly predictive of addiction, so we study that too. Much of our research takes
place in the community, studying how intentionally creating interpersonal, loving
connections between people can reduce or prevent the problematic use of substances.
We study how ready churches are to try to help reduce addiction and how effective
methods are to equip and mobilize Christians to walk with people who are struggling,
and does this "wraparound care" actually reduce substance use and its related problems.
