Please follow all directions on the 2025 Governor's School program student application.
1. The high school counselor nominates the student for the program and then submits his/her part to the student for him/her to complete and then submit to the math and science teacher that the student has chosen for their personal references. Please make sure all emails are spelled correctly (this will cause the application to be voided if the math and science teacher cannot receive the email from the redcap system letting them know that they need to complete the reference form for the student and then submit their part of the application).
2. The student will enter his/her email (they should not enter their school email address, must use personal email address), enter their parent/parent's email (please spell email correctly), and student will enter the email address two times each for their math and science teacher (hopefully, this will eliminate the incorrect spelling of the emails).
3. When the math and science teacher completes their part of the application an email is then sent to the counselor letting them know that it is time for them to complete the last part of the application and then submit it to the redcap system.
4. An email will then be sent to the counselor, student and the parent letting them know that the application was successfully submitted.
Any student that has been invited, has accepted and has been admitted into the 2025 GS IB&SS program who would like to request accommodations should contact ETSU's disability services office by phone (423-439-8346) or by email (littleme@etsu.edu) prior to the start date of the Governor’s School program. Additionally, the Office of Disability Services can provide assistance for any applicant that may require accommodations in the admissions process.
Students from across the state of Tennessee (ninety-five counties) will be applying for acceptance into the Governor’s School in Integration of Biological & Statistical Sciences Program at ETSU in the summer of 2025.
We are excited that you are interested in the ETSU Governor’s School: Integration of Biological & Statistical Sciences. The overarching goal of the Governor’s School is to broaden the student’s appreciation and knowledge of biology and mathematics through exposure to and integration of a wide range of contemporary biological and mathematical topics. In each case, model building and data analysis will play a critical role and will be interwoven in a statistical and biological context. Students will be engaged in the scientific method via hands-on research experiences.
Resources from ETSU’s strong undergraduate science and mathematics program, research laboratories, and local schools will be used to accomplish these objectives. In addition, the program will make use of resources from industry, governmental agencies, and academic science establishments. Thus, the school will provide a series of courses, laboratories, research projects, field trips, seminars, lectures, and other activities centered on mathematics, statistics, and biology.
The curriculum will consist of courses BIOL 1110-070 Lecture, BIOL 1111-070 Lab (total of 4 credits, biological science for majors) and MATH 1530-070 (3 credits, probability and statistics), which will be taught in the integrated fashion developed through a $1.7 million grant from Howard Hughes Medical Institute.
We are guided by the conviction that today’s students are attracted to science and mathematics when these are seen as interconnected fields rather than as separate bodies of knowledge. Thus, thirty talented rising juniors/seniors from across the state of Tennessee will be immersed in scientific instruction and inquiry in several interdisciplinary fields of science. Second, connections between these fields will be seen through the ubiquity of mathematical modeling, data analysis, and the need for high level computation.
Last but not least, students will gain a healthy respect for many disciplines and thus have a variety of career choices to consider as they get ready to enter college. In a nutshell, our renaissance style Governor’s School prepares students for many possible career options.
The 2025 Governor's School in Integration of Biological & Statistical Sciences will begin on Sunday, May 25th, 2025 with the opening ceremony and will conclude on Friday, June 27th, 2025 with the closing ceremony and certificate award presentation.
