East Tennessee State University is proud to announce that nine students have been awarded the prestigious Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship for spring 2025. It marks a record-breaking achievement for the university, exemplifying ETSU’s commitment to global education.

Awarded by the U.S. Department of State, the Gilman Scholarship enables outstanding undergraduate students with financial need to study or intern abroad. ETSU’s newest Gilman cohort represents a combined $27,000 in award funding and over 830 days of international study across six countries: Scotland, Ireland, Japan, Italy, Peru and the United Kingdom.

“The Gilman Scholarship transforms lives by launching students into international learning experiences they might not otherwise be able to pursue, and it often marks the first step toward competitive graduate fellowships, elite internships, coveted research awards and career opportunities,” said Dr. Carson Medley, director of the Office of Prestigious Awards.

All nine recipients are Pell Grant eligible, and most are first-generation college students with an average GPA of 3.7. Their experiences will take place at numerous institutions, including the University of Edinburgh, Chuo University, the University of Westminster and the University of Limerick.

The cohort also includes a recipient of the Gilman-McCain Scholarship, a special branch of the Gilman program that honors the legacy of Sen. John McCain by providing study abroad funding to dependents of active-duty military personnel.
