Katrina Heil joined the faculty of ETSU in 2007. She teaches courses on Spanish language, culture, and literature. Katrina's area of specialization is contemporary Spanish theatre. Her research focuses on the genre of tragedy, historical drama, the connection between theatre and national identity, and the positive impact of the performing arts on PTSD and other mental health disorders. She has published her research in Anales de la literatura contemporánea, Hispanic Journal, Estreno, Hispanic Studies Review, as well as a book chapter on Calderón de la Barca in Prismatic Reflections on Spanish Golden Age Theater. Katrina published her book, Antonio Buero Vallejo: Tragedy, History, Memory, with Peter Lang, Oxford in 2024.
In Fall 2023, Katrina served as Interim Director of Women's, Gender, and Sexuality
Studies. Katrina currently serves as Coordinator of the Graduate Certificate in Healthcare Spanish. In 2022, Katrina was elected to serve as Secretary-Treasurer of the Mountain Interstate Foreign Language Association, an organization of teachers, scholars, and graduate students dedicated to the advancement
of scholarship in language and culture. In 2024, Katrina co-hosted the 74th annual MIFLA Conference at ETSU with colleague Isabel Gómez Sobrino.
