Call for Papers
2023 Call for Papers
Abstract Submission Guidelines
Abstracts of 100-250 words should be emailed to the conference organizers, Thomas Alan Holmes (holmest@etsu.edu) and Joshua Reid (reidjs@etsu.edu), by March 3, 2023. Please include with the abstract your name, contact information, institutional affiliation, and whether you are an undergraduate or a graduate student.
Students from any academic discipline are eligible to submit material to this conference, but the submissions must be about literature.
Essays may address literature from any genre, region, or historic period. While essays may address literature not written in English, the SASCOL presentation must be in English.
Completed essays should be approximately 6-8 pages (double-spaced) in length, for a reading time of 15 (fifteen) minutes. Panel chairs will assure that scheduled presenters will get their fair reading time assigned to them.
Panel Submission Guidelines
SASCOL welcomes panel submissions of three-four related papers. For consideration of a panel, please send all abstracts in a single document; the first page of the document should contain as a cover sheet the name, contact information, institutional affiliation, and student status (graduate or undergraduate) of each student presenter. Each presenter will be allotted 15 fifteen minutes reading time (approximately 6-8 pages, double spaced). Panel participants may also submit completed work for the Achievement in Essay Award, following the guidelines below. The panel covener can be either a graduate student member of the panel or a sponsoring faculty member if the panel consists entirely of undergraduate students.
Achievement in Essay Award Submission Guidelines
Those who wish to submit their completed essays for consideration of our "Achievement in Essay" award (with cash prize) should send completed essays of approximately 6-8 double-spaced pages in length by the abstract submission date—March 3, 2023—to the conference organizers. Students who are part of a panel presentation but who also wish to submit an “achievement in essay” award submission must also submit their entire essay these guidelines, with an indication on the cover sheet that the paper will be part of their panel.
Paper documentation should follow either the MLA or the APA formats.
We wish to follow a blind submission policy. Student name, essay category (undergraduate or graduate), contact information, and essay title should be on the cover sheet. If the paper will be part of a proposed panel, indicate the name of the panel on the cover sheet as well. The essay's title should also be on the first page of the essay, but the student name should not appear anywhere but the cover sheet.
Please e-mail your submissions to the conference organizers, Thomas Alan Holmes (holmest@etsu.edu) and Joshua Reid (reidjs@etsu.edu), by March 3, 2023.
There will be prizes for the best undergraduate and graduate student submission. Winners will receive a certificate and a cash prize (last year’s prize: $250), as well as recognition on the conference website.
SASCOL 2023 will take place at East Tennessee State University on April 14, 2023. There is no registration fee for this conference.
