Noyce Summer Internships
East Tennessee State University Noyce Summer Internships
The application deadline for Summer 2023 has passed. The next deadline will be March 15, 2024.
Over the summer of 2024, a number of paid summer internships will be available for undergraduate Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics majors. This is a 5-week program, in which the intern will work at a local science museum/camp/educational facility. The interns will lead classroom activities, make presentations, do demonstrations, and assist the staff in a variety of tasks. The intern program will run for five weeks, from approximately June 1-July 17, approximately 40 hours per week. Participants will receive a stipend of $3000.
Seven undergraduates participated in the Noyce intern program during Summer 2022.
Left to right: Xavier Hurley (Physics), Hannah Blair (Chemistry), Grant Shirley (Math),
Hayden Ferguson (Chemistry), Alexandria Marshall (Chemistry), Allen Oudom (Chemistry),
and Joshua Filoteo (Physics).
To learn more about their experiences as Noyce interns, watch this 16-minute-long video of interviews of the interns (video created by Jason Jones, ETSU Media Specialist, Academic Technology Services
at ETSU).
Potential host organizations include the Hands On Discovery Center in Gray Tennessee, the Renaissance Camp on the ETSU campus, the Langston Centre in Downtown Johnson City, Bays Mountain Park in Kingsport Tennessee, the Gray Fossil Site/Natural History Museum in Gray Tennessee, Science Hill High School Summer School, and the Upward Bound program on the ETSU campus. All ETSU students majoring in Chemistry, Physics, and Mathematics are eligible, except for graduating seniors and students who have taken a course
through the Education College. This intern program is specifically targeting students
who have never taken a course in education. Students must have been enrolled at ETSU
during Fall 20223 to be eligible as an intern for summer 2024, and they must be planning
to enroll again during Fall 2024 as undergraduates.
The deadline for applications for summer 2023 has passed. Watch this space for application
forms for summer 2024.
Note that the application form will ask for two letters of reference from faculty.
Before filling out the application form, ask your references if they are willing to
provide a reference for you. After you submit your application, your recommenders
will receive automatic requests for letters of reference from the application software.
This automatic request will come via email from Dr. Scott Kirkby, so warn your recommenders
to expect this email. Since the members of the Noyce team will be reviewing the
applications, do not ask anyone on the Noyce team (Dr. Beverly Smith, Dr. Scott Kirkby,
Dr. Moin Uddin, or Dr. Jamie Price) for a letter of reference. Instead, ask other
faculty members.

double major).
