Graduate school bound! | Eight new ETSU Physics major graduates started graduate school this fall. Starting graduate school in Physics are: Joseph Hewa (University of Tennessee Knoxville), Trevor Cox (Washington State University), Joseph Fry (North Carolina State), Nicolaus Meredith (North Carolina State), Amelia Greathouse (McGill University), and Grace Anderson (Auburn University). Starting graduate school in the ETSU Masters of Arts in Teaching program are Joshua Filoteo and Marissa Hankins. | |
Austin Bazydlo | Physics major graduate Class of 2016 Austin Bazydlo (formerly Austin Patrick) is now the Chief of the Data Science and AI Applications Branch in the Division of Technical Resources at the National Institutes of Health. He received a Ph.D. in Medical Physics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2021. | |

Melvin Joseph Weatherly | Melvin Joseph Weatherly (Class of 2012) reports that he currently works as a Radiation Health Physicist at the Washington State Department of Health. His focus is on X-ray compliance and equipment testing, as well as mammography program audits. Joe received his M.S. in Applied Physics from the University of Washington in 2016. | |

- Austin Patrick (now Austin Patrick Bazydlo), ETSU Physics major class of 2016, has completed his Ph.D. in Medical Physics from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. His thesis title was `Associations of White Matter Microstructure to Memory Processes: Insights for Neuroplasticity and Cognitive Decline'. He previously completed a masters in Medical Physics from the same school in 2018. He is now working as a Data Scientist at Healthcare Fraud Shield.

- Physics major Richard McDonald (shown) gave a talk titled `Implementing a Uranium Fission Insert at the LANL Ultracold Neutron Source' at the Virtual Division of Nuclear Physics conference, which was held October 29 - November 1, 2020. The Division of Nuclear Physics is a division of the American Physical Society. A link to his talk is provided here. Richard was supervised on his project by Dr. Robert Pattie. Physics major Kinsey Copeland also made a presentation at the meeting. Her project was titled `Determining the Charge Sharing Bias between Pixels in Nab Silicon Detectors'. She was supervised on her project by Dr. Leah Broussard from Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

Joseph McNeil

Joseph finished his Ph.D. in Physics at the University of Florida in December 2020, and Ashton is a Ph.D. candidate at Florida State University. They are living in Tallahassee Florida, and Joseph is now teaching at Tallahassee Community College.

The SULI program is funded by the U.S. Department of Energy. Kinsey is investigating the impact of charge-sharing between detector pixels on the accuracy of reconstruction of electron energy in the Nab experiment.

- As part of a summer Research Experiences for Undergraduates program, Physics major Peter Wagstaff is working at Miami University this summer. He is working in the Bose Einstein Condensate lab, building the optics and coils for laser cooling and magneto-optical traps.

- ETSU Physics and Astronomy Department faculty member Dr. Robert Pattie hosted a team meeting of the Ultracool Neutron tau (UCN tau) research group. The meeting was held at the Millenium Centre in Johnson City February 2-3, 2019. The UCN tau experiment is being conducted at Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico. ETSU undergraduate Physics major Isaiah Cox also participated in the meeting.

Dr. Robert Pattie
- New Assistant Professor of Physics Dr. Robert Pattie started teaching at ETSU in Fall 2018. Dr. Pattie received his B.S. in Physics from Virginia Polytechnical Institute and his Ph.D. in Physics from North Carolina State University. Before coming to ETSU, he was a Post-Doctoral Researcher at Los Alamos National Laboratory. He is an expert in low energy subatomic physics, particularly experimental work on ultracool neutrons.

- ETSU Physics major graduate Sharon Gray (Class of 2009) started a job as a lecturer in the Physics and Astronomy Department at ETSU. After graduating from ETSU, Sharon obtained a master's degree in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Tennessee.

Dr. Beverly Smith and Dr. Mark Giroux
- Department faculty Dr. Beverly Smith and Dr. Mark Giroux attended a meeting of the Physics Teacher Education Coalition (PhysTEC) in Baltimore Maryland March 4 - 6, 2016. They presented a poster entitled `Back to the Classroom: Teaching Radio Astronomy'. This described a program in which Physics/Astronomy majors/minors participated in a radio astronomy workshop, then did classroom presentations on radio astronomy.
