Pending funding, ETSU has recently been awarded a NASA grant to fund scholarships for Geosciences majors. These scholarships are aimed at students with an interest in Geophysics, Planetary Geology, or related topics.
These scholarships will be $1250 for the Spring 2026, with a possible extension for Fall 2026.
To receive a scholarship, students must be officially declared as a Geosciences major, and must be enrolled in one course towards the Physics minor in the Spring 2026 semester.
The combination of a Geosciences major and a Physics minor will open many career paths, including jobs in industry as a Geophysicist, employment at NASA on one of their planetary sciences missions, or graduate school in Climate Science, Geophysics, Environmental Science, or related fields. The purpose of these scholarships is to encourage students to consider the interdisciplinary field of Geophysics/Planetary Geology.
To be eligible for one of these scholarships, students must meet one of the following math requirements:
a) Obtained a score of 27 or higher on the MATH ACT test, OR
b) Have taken MATH 1720 (Pre-Calculus II) or MATH 1910 (Calculus I).
Scholarship application forms are available here.
Application forms can be submitted to Dr. Beverly Smith via email at smithbj@etsu.edu, or they can be brought to her office in Brown Hall room 273 or left in her mailbox in the Physics Dept main office Room 277.
