FAQ
-
What is the purpose of this research?
These studies help us gain insight into what types of knowledge infants have available to them early in life. -
Why are you studying babies?
Babies learn all about the world through their senses. Early in life, vision is particularly important. We study the ways in which your baby responds to sights and sounds of their world, and how those responses shape cognitive development. -
What happens after the study?
After we have completed a study, we take the data we have collected from all the babies who participated and analyze the results. The aim of these studies is to use the data to publish articles in peer-reviewed, academic journals. -
Will my baby's name be published?
No individual information is ever included or released. Participant anonymity is protected at all times. The name and video of your child will only be seen by members of our research team. -
Can I bring my other children along?
Yes, other children are welcome! We have lots of toys, books, and games to help keep them entertained. -
How long will the appointment take?
It is a pretty quick experience, the whole process usually takes around 30 minutes. -
What if I cannot come during the day?
No problem. We can schedule your appointment for an evening or weekend. -
Where do I park?
You can park in the lot located between Rogers-Stout and Burgin-Dossett Hall. You can park in any open space. A member of the research team will meet you here and provide you with a parking permit and escort you and your baby to the research lab. -
What do I get for participating?
You will receive a $15 gift card to Walmart or Target (your choice!) and your baby will receive a Certificate of Appreciation. -
How many times do I have to come?
We only ask you to come once. If you and your baby enjoy the experience, then we can call you for another appointment as your baby becomes older. -
Do I get the results for how my baby performed?
We are not able to give individual results for each baby. We do, periodically post results on the website where you can view the outcome of the studies your infant participated in. -
What if I need to cancel?
Just give us a call at 423-439-5221. -
How do you find subjects?
We recruit infants and parents to participate through the ETSU hospital as well as through local birth announcements in the paper. -
How many babies participate?
It depends on the study. Studies usually have anywhere between 40 and 160 infants participating. We run several studies at any given time, and appointments are available anytime, year round. -
