Michelle Freeman, Associate Professor of Accountancy and Graduate Coordinator of the M.Acc. program, is a certified public accountant and has been teaching at ETSU since 2015. She received her BBA, M.Acc., and Ed.D degrees from the University of Tennessee. She previously served on the faculty of Tusculum University, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, and Walters State Community College. For over 20 years, she has taught undergraduate and graduate courses in several accounting specializations including financial, cost, audit, advanced, and tax as well as business computers courses. Prior to beginning her career in academics, she completed an internship in audit with Ernst and Young while attending the University of Tennessee, and she worked as a CPA for two years at Burkhart and Company in Knoxville, Tennessee where she specialized in tax and financial planning. She has published over ten articles on various topics including accounting standards, taxation, and accounting education, and she has presented several of them at various local and regional conferences. She received the ETSU College of Business and Technology Outstanding New Faculty Award in 2019, and she received honorary membership into The National Society of Leadership and Success, Sigma Alpha Pi, for consistently demonstrating leadership qualities in a personal and professional capacity. In 2018-2019, she served as the President of the Appalachian Chapter of the Tennessee Society of CPA’s, and in 2020 she was named the Niswonger Faculty Fellowship in Accountancy recipient.
