The following list of core courses are those required for the completion of the graduate
certificate in Nature-Based Therapy. The descriptions can also be found in the ETSU
Graduate Catalog. Generally, students take them in order, however there are exceptions.
Please talk with the NBT graduate coordinator (Dr. Bethany Novotny) to plan your program of study. We request that HSRV 5500 Nature-Based Immersion
be completed during your last semester. In addition to the core coursework, students
are required to complete one elective. Please contact the certificate coordinator
(Dr. Bethany Novotny) to plan your advisor approved elective.

HSRV 5110 - Introduction to Nature Connection
Explores the history and overview of nature connection, nature-based therapy, and other related nature-based fields. Topics may include forest bathing, forest schools, rites of passage, soul craft, vision fasts, and nature-based interventions such as horticultural, animal-assisted, wilderness-based, adventure-based, etc. Due to the nature of this course, it will be expected that students have immersive experiences in various outdoor settings. -
HSRV 5130 - Nature- Based Therapy: Theory and Practice
Addresses the theoretical foundations of nature-based therapeutics, as well as commonly used practices, strategies, and interventions. The course surveys research that supports the theoretical foundations of nature-based interventions. Specific practices and methods that incorporate nature into the therapeutic process are explored and the opportunity to experience and practice these techniques in the field is presented. Due to the nature of this course, all students are required to attend field-based learning in different outdoor locations in the surrounding area. -
HSRV 5220 - Nature- Based Programming, Planning, and Implementation
Introduce planning and implementation of programs and activities in diverse nature-based settings using ecotherapeutic methods. The course addresses ethics, safety, and risk mitigation. Topics may include leadership, group dynamics, decision-making, risk management, responsible recreation and engagement with the natural world, and considerations and concerns related to specific outdoor activities. Due to the nature of this course, all students are required to attend field-based learning in different outdoor locations in the surrounding area. -
HSRV 5500 – Nature-Based Immersion
Provides a culminating experience that explores one’s personal relationship with the natural world, withdrawal from modern technologies, community building, therapeutic properties of the natural world, and personal meaning exploration. This course requires multi-day field-based learning in the outdoors.
