Access ETSU offers supplemental supports to young adults with an intellectual disability (ID) who seek to enhance their academic, career development, and social skills alongside their peers at ETSU.
In partnership with area school systems, local agencies, and the ETSU community, Access ETSU connects students to opportunities that will prepare them not only for competitive, integrated employment, but enhanced life outcomes.

Who is eligible?
Students with intellectual disabilities who:
- Are 18-25 years old and have graduated from their high school and/or exited special education services
- Have a personal desire to continue their education at the university level
- Want to expand their employment prospects
- Defining and Documenting Intellectual Disability for TPSID Program Participation

How do students choose courses?
Each student’s educational plan is based on a person-centered, individualized planning process. Each student chooses coursework from ETSU’s Undergraduate Course Catalog that aligns with employment goals and prospects, guided by academic advising.

How will Access ETSU support students?
Access ETSU offers:
- Individualized planning for up to three years
- Fostering independence, autonomy, and self-determination
- Inclusive participation in undergraduate classes
- Job coaching and career development
- Community and social integration
Students have access to all courses within the ETSU Undergraduate Course Catalog. Since this is a two-year program, we recommend that students have an academic/career focus area in mind prior to enrolling.The Access ETSU team works in partnership with the greater ETSU Community to provide any necessary accommodations or adaptions in academic, vocational, and social settings on an individual basis.
Our Navigators (peer mentors) are the primary, direct, daily support for students.

Can students live on campus?
Students who receive support from Access ETSU can apply for residential housing. However, Access ETSU does not provide residential living support. As you are deciding if campus living is the right choice for you, consider the following:
Can you wake up on time independently?- Can you independently manage personal needs (e.g., hygiene, medication, meals, etc.)?
- Can you monitor your personal safety with minimal support?

How will working with Access ETSU support student employment opportunities?
Students will participate in on and off campus employment opportunities including:
- Internships
- Service Learning
- Volunteering
As a Comprehensive Transition Program, students working with Access ETSU may be eligible for Federal Work Study.

How much does it cost?
Students enroll as undergraduate, non-degree students and follow the undergraduate student tuition and fees. Financial aid may be available.
