Supplemental Instruction
Supplemental Instruction (SI) is a form of structured group study that helps students
achieve academic success by integrating “what to learn” with “how to learn” in historically
difficult courses. SI consists of regularly scheduled, voluntary, out-of-class group
study sessions that focus on active learning, interaction, and collaboration to ensure
maximum learning, comprehension, and retention of material. Sessions are facilitated
by trained peer leaders (SI leaders) who have already taken the course and performed
well.
Data at ETSU shows that students who attend SI earn higher course grades than students who do not attend. To learn more about SI and to see our current SI schedules and SI leaders, visit our SI page.
Academic Coaching
Academic Coaching gives students an opportunity to become a VIB (Very Important Buccaneer)! VIBs are paired with academic coaches who will meet weekly with students to provide support and tips on everything from transitioning to ETSU to being successful inside the classroom. Coaches help students develop the skills they need to be academically successful while increasing students' confidence and motivation. Academic coaching is for everyone as we all benefit from having a peer who can help answer our questions and help troubleshoot issues as they arise. Additionally, students who participate in coaching receive access to perks and exclusive events.
