Courses Taught – The following courses are the most often taught; additional courses taught can be
provided upon request.
Introduction to School Administration (EDEL 612)
Trends and implications of major historical, philosophical, and ethical influences
affecting school organization and leadership are studied with particular reference
to democratic values. Processes are examined for use in the collaborative shaping
of a school vision with all stakeholders in the school community. A study of the research
on school improvement and effective schools is included. State laws and regulations
governing school quality in Virginia (Standards of Quality and Standards of Accreditation).
Three hours lecture.
Organization and Management of Public Schools (EDEL 621)
A comprehensive study of the varied managerial duties and responsibilities of school
principals at the elementary, middle and secondary levels. Examines the principal’s
managerial leadership role in school planning; organizing time, space and records;
master- scheduling; staffing; budgeting and purchasing; attending to staff and student
safety; overseeing school plant and grounds; and coordinating school programs for
student activities, transportation, custodians, clerks and food services employees.
Three hours lecture.
Educational Research (EDEF 606)
An analysis of various approaches to the planning of research. Discusses techniques
and procedures used in making and evaluating studies, both Qualitative and Quantitative
designs are explored, with associated data collection/analysis methods. Entry level
statistics included. Three hours lecture.
Supervision and Evaluation of Instruction (EDEL 614)
Study of the processes, techniques and problems associated with supervision, evaluation
and improvement of classroom instruction and instructional programs in K-12 schools.
Examination of the roles of school administrators and instructional supervisors in
the improvement and evaluation of instruction. Three hours lecture.
The School and Community Relations (EDEL 626)
Principles and practices of human relations within schools and effective school public
relations programs, development of mutual school and community understandings, public
participation in planning school programs and services, cooperative activities with
appropriate community groups and the relationship of school administrators and staffs.
Self-awareness of leadership skills and self-analysis of beliefs, values, actions
and their potential impact upon others is required. Examines the process of change
and its impact upon the school and community. Three hours lecture.
Current Issues in Education (EDEL 660)
Examines major problems or trends and their implications on education as well as possible
alternative solutions. The course is a survey/seminar framework. Three hours lecture.
Internship in School Administration (EDEL 690)
Requires that the student enter into an Administrative field experience in local schools
under the cooperative supervision of both local school/district and university personnel.
The student may register for Internship in 2.0 hour increments up to 6.0 hours. Each
2.0 hour increments up to 6.0 hours. Each 2.0 hour unit represents a minimum of 120
hours of Administrative experience. Students enrolled in Internship are also expected
to complete two (2) seminar classes for each 2.0 hour unit of the Internship. The
Internship meets state licensing requirements for Administrative field experience.
Six hours laboratory.
Loudoun County Public Schools; Leesburg Virginia (March 2000 – June 2002) Position: Director of Secondary Education
Central office administrator responsible for monitoring and evaluating the secondary
instructional program, covering 20 secondary schools and over 20,000 students. Main
responsibilities are as follows: Work with senior staff, instructional supervisors,
and principals to articulate programs in a K-12 environment. Recommend staffing for
all secondary schools, provide policy and procedure support for secondary school administrative
personnel, conduct workshops and training for administrators in areas such as leadership
/ technology / school scheduling, as well as keeping secondary staff notified of new
policies, trends, and practices, as well as directly evaluating all secondary principals.
Work with budget development for secondary education and the department of instruction;
write and administer grants.
Warren County Public Schools; Front Royal Virginia (August 1997 - March 2000) Position: Assistant Superintendent
Central office administrator responsible for instruction and personnel in a 5,000
student school system with eight schools. Primary responsibilities include K-12 instructional
program development, staff development, instruction / curriculum evaluation and assessment,
personnel, licensure, policy development, staffing and instructional assignments,
as well as overseeing the variety of testing programs in a K – 12 system, and developing
/ monitoring budget items relating to staff development / text books / tuition assistance
/ grants. Direct supervision of and responsibilities for Special Education Director
and programs, Elementary Education Director and programs, Middle and Secondary Supervisor
and programs, and Alternative Program Director and all alternative programs.
Clarke County Public Schools; Clarke County Virginia (February 1994 – July 1997) Position: Principal, Johnson-Williams Middle School
Chief administrator for a grade six thru eight middle school of 450 students. Supervisor
to a staff of 58. Primary responsibilities include personnel supervision and evaluation,
school budget development and fiscal decisions, curriculum development and implementation,
and physical plant management. Other focus areas include overseeing the Special Education
plan for our building, developing positive school climate, enhancing school / community
relationships, and providing visionary leadership and direction to our school.
Accomplishments since assuming principalship include: implementation of block scheduling,
restructuring of school based Quality Improvement model, development of a P.T.S.O.
and a Booster Club, implementation of a diagnostic and prescriptive L.P.T. preparation
model, introduction of second language offerings at the sixth grade, and reduction
of discipline referrals by 33%.
Culpeper County Public Schools; Culpeper Virginia (October 1991 – August 1993) Position: Assistant Principal, Culpeper County Middle School
Served as sub-school administrator for eighth grade. Supervised 30 teachers, one guidance
counselor, 400 students, and custodial staff. Directly involved in teacher hiring
and dismissal. Developed sub-school master schedule. Developed and implemented an
accelerated program for over aged eighth grade students. Responsible for staff meetings,
training for transition from Junior High School to Middle School, home communications
ranging from home visits to newsletters, student discipline, special education and
child study administrator, and administrative representative to the Parent Advisory
Counsel.
Served two summers as Summer School Principal. Responsible for overseeing all aspects
of the summer program, including teacher hiring, student discipline policies and procedures,
program evaluation, and reporting to the central office. Worked closely with summer
session teachers on curriculum development and material acquisition.
Albemarle County Public Schools; Charlottesville Virginia (August 1988 – October 1991)
Position: Earth Science/Ecology Teacher, Albemarle High School
Taught levels II and III Earth Science (grade nine) and Ecology (grades 11, 12). Worked
as a team member on Project Success, a program for "At-Risk" students. Worked with
Science Fair and developed Science Week activities. Served on school based committees
for school climate improvement - chairperson of the Morale Committee. Coached lacrosse
and sponsored the Lacrosse Club.
Roanoke City Public Schools; Roanoke, Virginia (August 1986 – August 1988) Position: Earth Science/Life Science Teacher, Woodrow Wilson Junior High School
Taught general and honors Earth Science (grade nine) and Life Science (grade seven).
Served as chairperson of Extra Curricular Activities Committee as part of the school
biennial plan, served on the district Science Curriculum Committee, the Text Book
Adoption Committee, the Standards of Learning for Earth/Life Science Revision Committee,
and the Science Test Bank Development Committee. Co-sponsor of the Student Government
Association, co-sponsor of Outdoor Club, founded and sponsored the Guitar Club, and
sponsored the Talent Show. Served as sponsor and coach for Odyssey of the Mind. Co-sponsor
for the Science Fair and judge for High School Science Fair exhibits. Developed and
coached a lacrosse team at Patrick Henry High School.
