GRE Test Prep Workshop-TBD
This course is open to non-ETSU students and current students. The Office of Professional Development will offer a day-long workshop to assist prospective graduate school applicants to prepare for the Graduate Record Examination.
Participants in the workshop will receive five hours of instruction on the Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative, and Analytical Writing Measures of the GRE. They will also take three half-hour practice tests, receive scores for those tests along with advice on improving their scores.
Subjects covered in the workshop will include:
- Test-taking strategies for the new GRE
- Resources to prepare for the exam
- Score scales and timing for the three measures
- Reading comprehension questions
- Select-in-Passage questions
- Text completion questions
- Sentence equivalence questions
- Analyze Issue essays
- Analyze Argument essays
- Use of prompts in the analytical writing measure
- Quantitative Comparison: Greater than/less than, comparing the sizes of parts of geometric figures
- Algebra: Recognizing graphs of functions, evaluation of functions
- Geometry: Areas of regions, lengths of geometric figures, angles
- Data interpretation: Reading graphs, interpreting tables, bar graphs, pie charts
- Word problems: interpretations and strategies

ESL Additional Endorsement Professional Development
Open Enrollment Dates. These courses will provide self-paced, online material for Tennessee licensed teachers that will enable them to sit for the state licensure examination.
Classes start on a rotating basis depending on enrollment date.

Topic: Fostering Collaboration: Social Work Practice in Interprofessional Healthcare Teams.Providing care through interprofessional teams improves quality of care, safety, and efficiency of services for those with complex needs while increasing client access to available services. Social workers are an integral component of care teams, bringing an array of unique skills and knowledge. This presentation will discuss the benefits of team-based care, how to build strong interprofessional teams, and ethics related to interprofessional collaboration.

Podcasting for Everyone March 8th, 2024
ETSU's Office of Professional Development, in conjunction with the Department of Media & Communication, will be offering "Podcasting for Everyone". This workshop will be two hours for each session and includes time in a professional recording studio.
Participants will learn about and experience each step of the podcast creation process, from idea to production to distribution. Participants will use the knowledge, skills and hands-on experience obtained throughout the workshop to produce their own "mini" podcast episode. Successful completion of this course will result in a Podcasting Certificate sponsored by ETSU's Office of Professional Development.
The instructor for this course is Stacy Whitaker, Director of Engineering in the Dept of Media & Communication. Stacy is a broadcast engineer with 25 years of professional experience in coummunication, television, film and radio. The workshop will also include guest speaker Keith Brake, Director of Broadcasting for ETSU Athletics and co-host of the 'Jay&Keith Show' podcast.
The cost of the course is $150. ETSU employees may use their employee audit opportunity to pay for the course. Employees need to complete this form

Ruth Taylor-Read is Program Manager for the Office of Professional Development at
East Tennessee State University, Ruth works with community members to implement training
programs utilizing the gifts and talents of those community members. As a small business
owner, she enjoys creating a safe space for everyone at Cranberries Café. She is the
mother of two daughters and the grandmother of the world’s most amazing granddaughters.She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Women’s Studies, an M.S. in Human Services, and an M.Div. She is currently writing her dissertation to complete her D.Min with a focus on family and Congregational Care.. Ruth has experience in social services, nonprofit leadership, program design, and grassroots activism. She has been a dedicated community volunteer serving as a member of the Johnson City Sexual Assault Task Force, and as Co-Founder of Women Matter Northeast Tennessee a 501©4 organization that focused on issues that affected the daily lives of women in East Tennessee. She currently serves on the board of directors for Frontier Health SAFE House.

The Enneagram and You: Understanding How Personality Types Show Up at Work
The first portion of this class will offer an overview of the Enneagram and take a deep dive into each of the nine types of Enneagram personalities - with specific emphasis on how each type can present at the workplace. The second portion will assist attendees on how to interpret their personal Enneagram profile, strengths, areas for growth, and explore how their Enneagram profile impacts work-related experiences - including stress and satisfaction. There will be opportunities for workshopping applied examples of work conflict and relationship / leadership goals. It is our hope that understanding the Enneagram and your own profile will increase psychological safety, flexibility, and well-being as it relates to your Work Life and your work-life balance.

Ballroom Dancing
February is a season of love, chocolates, and sweet sentiments. But what about extending the romance and bonding BEYOND Valentine’s Day? Join us as we explore the intricacies of nonverbal communication and partnership dancing with the wonderful instructors of Johnson City Ballroom. This nationally ranked and thriving studio will be showcasing two of the most common socially applicable dances: the rumba and foxtrot. Classes will be a journey through learning the foundation of each dance, as well as a few additional moves to utilize with them. No previous experience necessary! Whether a new budding partnership or a pair celebrating many anniversaries, we invite you to experience a fun, laughter-filled time through the joys of social dancing!
Classes will be held February 3, 2024 and February 10,, 2024 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

Instructors:
Vashay Conley - Born and raised in Johnson City, Vashay Conley is one of the senior certified instructors at Johnson City Ballroom. Graduating from Science Hill High School (2006), he is a band alumnus, with multiple awards and titles to his name, including former drum major. He attended Middle Tennessee State University for music business and began teaching ballroom dance in middle Tennessee. After a few years, he made his way back to his hometown and has been teaching locally for 4 years. His focus is pro/am partnerships, both social and competitive levels, and he has competed in professional circuits as well.
Darian and Tiffany Chancellor - Darian and Tiffany are Smooth Closed Regional Champions and Fred Astaire Open Rising Star Smooth Champions. Darian was awarded many Top Teacher Awards, Darian also won a National Pro-Am Cabaret title in 2010, before they made the transition of opening their own studio, Johnson City Ballroom in 2011. Tiffany recently won a National Pro-Am American Rhythm title in 2023.

Buffalo Mountain Writers Workshop: Out of the Woods-Writing from Fairy Tales
In the depths of the woods - the wolf, the witch, the evil stepmother - folklorists and fairy tale writers of the past explored what is hidden in humanity. Fairy tales give us imagery, tropes, symbolism, and stock characters to express the wisdom of our own experience. This class will workshop writing from fairy tales that can be used in the classroom or public speaking, or submitted for publication.
Class will take place November 7th, 14th, and 21th, from 6 - 9pm.

Instructor- Dr. Anne Acker is the Program Coordinator for English at Tusculum University in Greeneville, TN. A lifelong native of East Tennessee, she holds degrees from Milligan University and East Tennessee State University, as well as a Ph.D. from the University of Tennessee - Knoxville. Her areas of specialization include Renaissance Literature and Rhetoric, though she teaches a wide variety of courses for the English Program at Tusculum. Some of her teaching interests include mythology, science fiction and fantasy, as well as survey courses in British and World literatures. Her hobbies include photography, long drives on mountain roads and haunting bookstore cafes.

Hands On! Discovery Center
This certificate is an educational program of study for those interested in expanding skills and knowledge for personal and/or professional development in the tourism and hospitality industry. This includes working tourism and hospitality professionals who wish to hone their skills in management, public relations, current technology, social trends or graduate students wanting to augment their programs of study with an invaluable skill set. The certificate program prepares graduates for entry or advanced promotion into a wide range of management positions in culinary, food & beverage, lodging, attraction, and tourism related industries. The program is intended for those who desire skills needed in the workforce at large. Students will learn regional and international facets of the hospitality and tourism industry with topics ranging from marketing, financial, safety, strategic, and employee management in the local billion-dollar tourism industry. The program is designed with a strong emphasis on applied skills. Students will have access to industry leaders, as well as experienced faculty and staff.
Curriculum
The certificate in Hospitality and Tourism Management requires the completion of two six week sessions offered during the fall and spring semesters. Courses are offered on Tuesdays from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Hands On! Discovery Center. The certificate is divided into two sessions and taught by a variety qualified leaders and faculty in the industry focused on specific skillsets. The certificate may be completed in one year, or extended across several semesters.

ADOBE Creative Cloud Training in Photoshop, InDesign and Premiere Pro
ETSU's Department of Media and Communication offers courses and testing that lead to the Adobe Certified Associate (ACA) professional credential: in Photoshop, InDesign, and Premiere Pro. Course participants will have access to online training materials for 3 weeks, and will then attend a day-and-a-half of online workshops. The certification exam will be administered at the end of the second workshop day. Course fees include all course materials, instructor fees, exam fees, and the option for one retake.
Although participants will select only one of the programs in which to take the ACA exam (Photoshop, InDesign, Premiere Pro), they will have access to training materials for all 3 programs.
