The Standardized Patient Program aids teaching and assessment through trained standardized patients and recorded encounters. The program supports programs across Quillen College of Medicine and other health professions programs with clinical skills training and assessment.
The program utilizes several workspaces across the Mountain Home VA Campus, including ETSU’s Center for Interprofessional Collaboration, which features mock clinical rooms, and the Standardized Patient Lab, which includes mock hospital bays.

Standardized patients are trained individuals who portray patients, family members or other roles to support health professions’ training through realistic, consistent scenarios. Standardized patients allow learners to practice clinical communication and patient interaction in a controlled educational setting.
- Support learners as they practice communication and history-taking skills.
- Help create a safe environment to work through emotional or complex situations.
- In some cases, assist with teaching physical exam skills through additional training.

Who's a good fit?
The program seeks reliable people with strong communication skills who can learn roles, follow protocols and provide constructive feedback. This is occasional, part-time work, and ETSU welcomes a diverse pool of participants.
