Students enrolled in online courses pay an online course fee. Information Technology Services distributes the money collected from this fee back to departments, uses it to support faculty who are developing new courses, and provides funding for other electronic infrastructure. Courses are identified as online courses when they are created by the department in Banner.
Online section numbers begin with a 9 and vary within that range. 990-999 section numbers are reserved for our synchronous online courses and all other numbers are used for online asynchronous courses.
The instructional method for all online courses should be WEB. These two things combined ensure that the course is categorized correctly and that the proper fees are assessed to the student.
Both asynchronous and synchronous online courses may only be offered as standalone courses and cannot be combined with on-ground courses.
Remote courses are live broadcast extensions of an in-person course and should be created with a TWY Instructional Method code and a 500-599 section number.
Please contact the Office of the Registrar at 423-439-6744 if you have any questions about building online courses in Banner.

Beginning after the Spring 2023 semester, ETSU is adding a new designation for synchronous online courses that are broadcast
from an in-person classroom. These broadcast sessions will be known as remote to better
differentiate them from a more intentional online-only synchronous course.
This change is to help students understand what to expect when they register for courses.Departments
should build remote courses with a "TWY" course delivery code in Goldlink and use
a 5xx section number.
This new remote designation will not trigger the online course fee for students, and
will not be eligible for the eRate.
Within D2L, in-person courses can be combined with remote designated online courses,
but not synchronous online courses.
Thank you for your patience while we make this transition. We believe it will better
serve our students. Please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions
or concerns.
Please contact Myra Jones at 439-8614 or mjones@etsu.edu if you have questions about the correct modality to use or are interested in converting a remote class to an online class.
