PGY2 Residency Programs
Welcome to the PGY2 Residency Programs at ETSU Bill Gatton College of Pharmacy. Our accredited programs in Internal Medicine and Ambulatory Care are designed to provide advanced clinical training and academic excellence under the guidance of experienced preceptors. With primary practice sites at Johnson City Medical Center, Ballad Health Medical Associates, and ETSU Family Medicine Clinics residents gain hands-on experience in diverse healthcare settings. Our rigorous curriculum, including required and elective rotations, prepares pharmacists to excel in their specialized fields.

Internal Medicine Program
Program Overview
Led by Dr. Kelly Covert, PharmD, BCPS, in this comprehensive training experience IM residents spend a significant portion of time working with full-time internal medicine faculty members as well as with clinical specialists at Johnson City Medical Center, a teaching hospital and Level 1 trauma center affiliated with the East Tennessee State University. Residents are expected to participate in the Department of Family Medicine Transitions of Care Clinic once per week and staff at Johnson City Medical Center one weekend per month.
Residents will also instruct students in didactic, active learning, and experiential settings. The resident will be mentored to independently precept pharmacy students by the end of the residency year.
Required Rotations
Residents are required to complete 8 months of required rotations - 1 month-long rotation in each of the following areas:
- Orientation,
- Inpatient Family Medicine,
- Inpatient Internal Medicine,
- Infectious Disease,
- Critical Care Medicine,
- Cardiology,
- Inpatient Medicine Precepting,
- Hospitalist Medicine
Elective Rotations
Residents must complete an additional 4 rotations which they can ellect from the following areas:
- Trauma,
- Academia,
- Oncology,
- Pediatrics,
- Nutrition,
- Psychiatry
Longitudinal Experiences
Residents are required to complete the following longitudinal experiences:
- Ambulatory care (1 afternoon/ week),
- Clinical staffing (1 weekend/ month)
Clinical Practice Sites
Johnson City Medical Center (JCMC) is a 445-bed tertiary referral center located in Northeastern Tennessee. JCMC is one of five Level 1 Trauma Centers in the state of Tennessee and is a Thrombectomy-Capable Stroke Center. JCMC is part of Ballad Health, an integrated healthcare delivery system serving 29 counties in Northeastern Tennessee, Southwestern Virginia, Northwestern North Carolina, and Southeastern Kentucky.

Ambulatory Care Program
Program Overview
Under the direction of Dr. Brandi Dahl, PharmD, BCPS, BCACP, the "Amb-Care" resident spends a significant portion of time working with full-time internal medicine faculty members as well as with clinical specialists at Johnson City Medical Center, a teaching hospital and Level 1 trauma center affiliated with the East Tennessee State University.
