Will someone help me prepare and participate in the recruitment process?
For the fall semester, Rho Sigmas or Rho Sigs are recruitment guides who have disaffiliated from their chapter to help potential new members throughout the recruitment process. Potential new members are placed into Rho Sig groups after they have registered for recruitment. -
If I go through the recruitment process, do I have to join?
No. You do not have to join an IFC fraternity just because you participate in the recruitment process. You are strongly encouraged to participate in all recruitment activities since this provides excellent opportunity to meet all chapters. Due to the commitment of fraternity membership, you should feel 100% comfortable with your choice. -
Is this my only opportunity to join an IFC fraternity?
We cannot guarantee that chapters will offer bid invitations after their initial bidding period, which typically takes place at the start of the semester. However, it is a common practice at ETSU that chapters will participate in “continuous open bidding” or informal recruitment throughout the fall and spring semesters, allowing others to join after the fall formal recruitment period. -
Can I join more than one social fraternity?
No. Although you may become familiar with all organizations through the recruitment process, you may only accept one invitation to join an IFC chapter at ETSU.
Members are eligible to join Greek-lettered organizations that center on professions, majors, academic honors, or community service.

How much does it cost to be a member of a chapter?
Fraternity membership does have an annual cost as an undergraduate student. This is called “dues” and is usually more expensive as a new member, then goes down after the new member period. This amount varies among chapters. For individual chapter dues and what this money covers, please contact a representative from each of the individual chapters.
Joining a chapter will require dues payments that range anywhere from approximately $400-$650 for the first semester and approximately $550-$600 for each semester thereafter.

What about Hazing?
The ETSU policy on Hazing states: Hazing. Hazing, as defined in TCA § 49-7-123(a)(1), means any intentional or reckless act, on or off the property, of any higher education institution by an individual acting alone, or with others, which is directed against any other person(s) that endangers the mental or physical health or safety of that person(s), or which induces or coerces a person(s) to endanger such person(s) mental or physical health or safety. Hazing does not include customary athletic events or similar contests or competitions, and is limited to those actions taken and situations created in connection with initiation into or affiliation with any organization;
Any allegations or reports of hazing are taken seriously and acted upon swiftly. Reports may come in to the Dean of Students, Director of Fraternity and Sorority Life, or by completing the report form online.
A list of institutional expectations and disciplinary procedures may be found in the “Student Conduct and Rights” section of the current year’s academic catalog.
If you need to call attention to a student of concern, please review information about ETSU's CARE Report.
