Open Teaching @ ETSU
"We must observe each other teach, at least occasionally - and we must spend more
time talking to each other about teaching."
Spend some time observing some of your high-impact instructor-colleagues teaching in their native habitat.
Watch for how innovative, active learning happens in various teaching contexts. Get inspired in big and small ways!
Open Teaching is an opportunity to go visit classes on campus where the instructors have agreed to host visitors. You can find a class of interest that fits your schedule, reach out to the instructor to get the details and arrange the visit, and go observe and pick up a few new ideas.
How it works:
- Find class options below.
- For on-ground classes, contact the instructor at least one week ahead of your visit to find the best observation date and to learn the location of the class.
- Go to observe: For in-person classes, an observation period of 45-60 minutes is ideal. For classes that last over an hour, you need not stay the full time, but please slip out as quietly and unobtrusively as possible.
- Some online classes are also available to observe, using a video tour provided by the instructor. You can request the link to one or more of those course tours, below.
To receive CTE credit for your observation:
- Thoughtfully complete our Observation Reflection Form,
- For in-person class observations, receive 1.5 hours of CTE credit
- For online class tours, receive 1 hour of CTE credit
We must receive your completed reflection form for credit.
Open Teaching Instructors & Classes, Spring 2026
Please do not show up unannounced. Contact the instructor at least one week in advance to arrange an observation day and learn the class location.
