Brief Bio
Kanishka Chakraborty, MD is an Associate Professor of Medicine at East Tennessee State University's Quillen College of Medicine in Johnson City. After earning his medical degree from prestigious Medical College Calcutta (Est 1835), Dr. Chakraborty completed his residency in Internal Medicine and fellowship in Medical Oncology at East Tennessee State University.
During his post-graduate training, he was honored with the designation of Chief Resident and subsequently Chief Fellow. Board certified both in Internal Medicine and Medical Oncology,
Dr. Chakraborty serves on the faculty of the Department of Internal Medicine’s Division of Hematology/Oncology. His research interests encompassed assessing the role of tocotrienols in pancreatic cancer cells in order to explore their potential use as an adjunct to cancer treatment. In 2012, Dr. Chakraborty received the Paul E. Perlman Award for Research Excellence from Quillen Colleges Department of Internal Medicine.
In his role as a clinician, Dr. Chakraborty received the 2009 David Daigneault Award from the Department of Internal Medicine, which honors a medicine resident with outstanding clinical skills who demonstrates superior humanistic qualities, compassion, and empathy for patients. He was subsequently recognized twice by the Department of Internal Medicine for providing exceptional patient care.
Dr. Chakraborty has published several articles in peer-reviewed journals, including the Journal of Oncology Pharmacy Practice, Anticancer Research, BMC Cancer, American Journal of Medical Science and Free Radical Biology and Medicine. He has presented his research work in the renowned AACR annual conference in 2011 and 2013. He is actively involved in mentoring medical students, residents and fellows. Under his expert guidance Medical Oncology fellows have been successful to accomplish award-winning presentation about unique clinical findings in regional and national conferences including Appalachian Student Research Forum, Southern Society of Clinical Investigation Annual Meeting, American College of Physician State chapter meeting and American Medical Association annual meeting. He has also contributed in book chapter “Tocotrienols in Pancreatic Cancer Treatment and Prevention” for “Oxidative Stress and Dietary Antioxidants.
He has contributed as a reviewer for the American Journal of Hospice and Palliative Medicine, Therapeutic Advances in Hematology, American Journal of Medical Science and Annals of Internal Medicine. Dr. Chakraborty also won the 2012 Gold Scholarship from the New England Journal of Medicine for his essay exploring how the Internet and social networking (“Better health owes it to social networking”) can be harnessed to improve health.
Dr. Chakraborty also holds multiple administrative responsibilities both in Department of Internal Medicine, Quillen College of Medicine and Ballad Health. He is a member of the American
College of Physicians, American Medical Association, American Society of Clinical Oncology, American Society of Hematology, American Association of Cancer Research (AACR), American Association of Advancement of Science, Tennessee Oncology Practice Society and Southern Society of Clinical Investigation.
Dr. Chakraborty practices at Regional Cancer Center in Johnson City. In order to best meet the need of community in East Tennessee, South West Virginia, and surrounding areas he has kept his clinical interest broad in the field of Oncology including Breast, Lung, GI, Lymphoma, Myeloma etc.
Dr. Chakraborty is living in Johnson City with his family for more than a decade. He is an active partner of various community development projects. He is a dedicated supporter of any efforts to make life better for our ‘four legged friends’ and a member of Founder’s Society in American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals
