Department Overview
The ETSU Department of Surgery is dedicated to offering our residents top-notch training in general surgery. Graduating residents leave with a solid foundation, meeting the American Board of Surgery case experience requirements. Our program emphasizes a diverse clinical training experience and follows the Surgical Council on Resident Education (SCORE) curriculum. Additionally, there are opportunities for research, supported by six full-time faculty members and multiple post-doctoral fellows, with $8.7 million in research funding, including $5 million from NIH.
Why ETSU? How To Apply Benefits
Program Overview
ETSU Surgery offers exceptional training at affiliated hospitals, primarily at Johnson City Medical Center (JCMC), a 488-bed Level I Trauma center. Other facilities include Bristol Regional Medical Center, Franklin Woods Community Hospital for minimally invasive and robotic surgery, Holston Valley Medical Center and James H. Quillen Veteran’s Affairs Medical Center for general surgery and endoscopy training. Additionally, PGY 4 residents can take an elective international rotation at Monze Missions Hospital in Zambia, and the department offers a Global Surgery Fellowship directed by Dr. Luther Ward with opportunities in Africa.
Residents engage with a diverse range of surgical faculty, including community general surgeons and specialists in fields such as Acute Care, Trauma, surgical oncology, and pediatrics. Rotations include one-on-one apprenticeships and team-oriented university settings. About 70% of graduates practice general surgery, while others pursue advanced fellowships in areas like cardiothoracic, colorectal, and transplant surgery. Our program seeks motivated medical graduates passionate about quality patient care, lifelong learning, and teaching. Explore our videos to learn more about what ETSU offers.
