ETSU’s Applied Equity Class has once again outperformed the S&P 500 in the Tennessee Valley Authority's Investment Challenge. In 2023, the class secured its fifth consecutive year of success and marked its 15th out of 19 years of surpassing the benchmark.
The TVA Investment Challenge Program, designed to promote economic development and strengthen the region's educational infrastructure, enables students to actively manage TVA funds. By applying long-term investment strategies and competing against the S&P 500 index, students gain real-world experience in portfolio management. The program contributes directly to the training of future business leaders in the Tennessee Valley region.
This unique, hands-on experience empowers ETSU’s Economics and Finance students to make decisions related to a substantial portfolio valued at over $500,000. With the guidance of experienced financial managers and analysts from TVA, students compete with 24 other schools across Kentucky, Alabama, Tennessee, and other states, making a significant impact on the region's economic growth.
Managing approximately $500,000 for the TVA, ETSU has earned about $100,000 in performance bonus money, showcasing their financial prowess. Over the last five years, the university secured victory twice, triumphing over 25 other schools. Throughout their time competing in the TVA Investment Challenge, ETSU has achieved 14 top-ten and 7 top-three finishes in the competition.
