Bachelor of Fine Arts (Studio Art)

The B.F.A. (Studio Art) is appropriate for the student who desires to be a professional artist. Students may specialize in a particular area of emphasis, including ceramics, drawing, fibers, graphic design, metalsmithing, painting, photography, printmaking, or sculpture, or they may choose to study a variety of studio areas.

Students who wish to pursue the B.F.A. are required to pass a portfolio review, ARTA 2916, B.F.A. Portfolio Review, after completing 21 studio credit hours. Grades in Art and Art History must be C or above for students in this major.

All B.F.A. students work with departmental advisors to successfully complete all the required classes for the degree. Each area of emphasis has a check sheet listing required and recommended classes in that particular area of study.

During the second-to-final semester of studies, B.F.A. students are required to enroll in ARTA 4915, Portfolio and Exhibition. In the final semester, they are required to enroll in ARTA 4906, BFA Capstone. In these capstone classes, students will develop a professional portfolio of art work and participate in a B.F.A. exhibition.

Many students who earn the B.F.A. go on to pursue the M.F.A., the terminal degree for studio artists. The M.F.A. is the credential required for teaching studio art at the college and university level.
