Dr. Joe Moore currently serves as Director of Athletic Bands, Associate Director of Bands, and Associate Professor of Music at East Tennessee State University, having been granted tenure in 2019.
Joe joined the ETSU faculty in 2014 and was tasked with revitalizing the Marching Bucs, which had been dissolved a decade earlier. Under Dr. Moore’s leadership, the group has enjoyed explosive, exponential growth year-to-year, from a membership of 165 in its 2015 debut season to well above 300 active members at present, continually and consecutively breaking the record for the largest band in ETSU history.
Along with a surge in membership, the Marching Bucs have quickly established themselves as a premier marching arts organization with national recognition. The group was chosen to represent the State of Tennessee in the 2024 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, the first time a collegiate band from Tennessee has been featured in over 50 years. Regionally, the band has given numerous exhibition performances at competitions such as the Bands of America Regional, Tennessee High School’s “Music in the Castle,” and Enka (NC) High School’s “Land of the Sky Marching Band Festival.”
Recently, Joe was selected to be featured in the “Dessert with the Experts” lecture series at ETSU, where guest speakers share wisdom from their area of expertise as well as a favorite recipe.
Before coming to ETSU, Dr. Moore served as Director of Bands at Delta State University in Cleveland, MS. Joe also taught for sixteen years in public schools of Tennessee, Virginia, and Georgia.
Joe Moore received the Doctor of Musical Arts Degree in Wind Band Conducting from the University of Kentucky, the Master of Music Degree in Instrumental Education from the University of Miami (FL), and the Bachelor of Music Education Degree from East Tennessee State University.
His professional memberships include Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia music fraternity, the National Band Association, the College Band Directors National Association, Tau Beta Sigma, Kappa Kappa Psi and Pi Kappa Lambda.
In addition to his duties at ETSU, Dr. Moore is active as a music arranger, clinician, adjudicator, guest conductor and proud “dog dad” to his miniature schnauzer, Brodie.
