Christian Swafford, DMA, is a percussionist, composer, and researcher whose work spans orchestral, chamber, and experimental music, steel pan, and interdisciplinary collaboration. He is Assistant Professor of Percussion and Percussion Area Coordinator at East Tennessee State University, where he directs the percussion program, the ETSU Percussion Ensemble Festival, and the Summer Percussion Institute. He is also principal percussionist with the Johnson City Symphony Orchestra and a section percussionist with the Symphony of the Mountains.

As a chamber and new-music performer, Swafford has premiered and commissioned several new works for percussion — including multiple collaborations with composer Peter Naughton — and has appeared at the Big Ears Music Festival and the Percussive Arts Society International Convention (PASIC). He is also active as a steel pan performer, with recent international travel in St. Lucia and local performances with the Blue Iron Steel Band. His own compositions have been performed at venues such as the Austin Percussion Festival, and his recent pieces include works for vibraphone and fixed media and for sleigh bells and found objects.

Swafford's scholarship applies neuroscience research on bimanual coordination to percussion pedagogy. His research has appeared in Percussive Notes (2025), and he has presented on the subject at PASIC and several regional institutions, most recently including Murray State University and the University of Tennessee, Martin. He serves on the Percussive Arts Society's Health and Wellness Committee.

Swafford is also an active marching arts educator and adjudicator, having taught competitively at the high school, collegiate, and WGI World Class levels -- including as percussion arranger for the University of Kentucky and University of Tennessee marching bands and an instructor of the KMEA 2023 state marching band champion Lafayette High School. At ETSU, he teaches the Marching Bucs, including a 2024 performance in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. His students have gone on to perform with the Bluecoats, Carolina Crown, Music City Mystique, Rhythm X, Phantom Regiment, and Blue Stars.

Prior to ETSU, Swafford performed as a section percussionist with the Lexington Philharmonic and taught at the University of Kentucky, Eastern Kentucky University, and Central Music Academy. Christian proudly endorses Black Swamp Percussion. He earned his Doctor of Musical Arts in Percussion Performance and Pedagogy at the University of Kentucky under James B. Campbell, and his Master of Music and Bachelor of Music in Music Education at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, under Dr. Andrew Bliss.
