Human Patient Simulation Laboratory
The "Patient Simulation Lab" (PSL) is a computer driven, multi-discipline facility that caters to all levels of providers. The human patient simulators can simulate a variety of human physiologic conditions based on physiologically accurate algorithms. We have two simulated hospital rooms integrated with video and audio recording equipment, which provide both instant and post-simulation feedback for students. Here at the Quillen College of Medicine, we emphasize application of basic science concepts / knowledge through the Human Patient Simulator.
The way we see it, practice makes perfect. If a student makes a serious medical mistake,
the patient is revived after a quick computer manipulation in the simulation lab.
Since the real emergency scenario provides no room for error, we believe that proper
preparation and application of learned knowledge on simulated mannequins provide the
necessary skills and confidence needed to transfer to a real-world hospital setting.
Mission
The Center for Experiential Learning serves to foster learning and academic achievement for all health care professionals. Through simulation, the Center serves the university and greater health care community by providing an experience that is grounded in educational theory, scientific discovery, and in sustaining the ultimate goal of superior patient care.
High School Summer Camp
The Center for Experiential Learning at the East Tennessee State University Quillen College of Medicine presents the annual summer camp, Simulated Medicine in Action for high school students.
This one-of-a-kind experience will allow students the opportunity to take on the role of primary health care provider as they care for their patients in a setting that closely mimics the emotional and physical characteristics of a hospital or clinic.
We are proud of our partnership with the Langston Centre. This partnership fosters engagement with our local community and provides an opportunity for students to make connections with local health care professionals while engaging in hands-on experiences.
Due to the uncertainty with the COVID-19 outbreak, the annual summer camp, Simulated Medicine in Action, has been suspended for the near future.
Summer Internship
The summer internship program was developed (in 2007) to provide an exposure to medical education for those interested in pursuing a career in medicine. In 2008 we expanded the program due to overwhelming interest from students from around the region.
The internship is open to anyone who desires to investigate what is available in medical education.
Simulation Platforms
The Center for Experiential Learning at the East Tennessee State University Quillen College of Medicine Simulation Lab has several Simulation Platforms that offer a variety of medical simulation training.
