Human Research Protection Program & Institutional Review Board (IRB)
An Institutional Review Board (IRB) is a committee established to review research involving human subjects. All research that involves humans as participants requires IRB review and approval prior to initiation of the study. The primary purpose of IRBs is to protect the rights and welfare of human subjects involved in research under their authority. ETSU has established two IRBs to review research from the Main Campus, Medical Campus, and Quillen VA Medical Center. Internal Funding Opportunities

The OVPR Research Funding Program (RFP) Awards, awarded annually, fund proposals that likely lead to external funding, increased institutional reputation, or significant missional impact. -
Startup Funding
To meet ETSU’s vision of being recognized as a premier R2 research university, it is essential that the university recruit faculty with significant research potential. In many disciplines, provision of startup funding is a key driver of whether or not faculty realize that potential. The Office of the Vice Provost for Research (OVPR) therefore strategically contributes to faculty startup packages. -
Trail Guide Research Mentorship Program
The OVPR Trail Guide Research Mentorship Program provides ETSU faculty with intensive mentorship, required monthly learning sessions, and editing support over an 8-month period. During the program, participants will develop a proposal ready to be submitted to an external funding entity at program completion. -

Boland Undergraduate Research Symposium
Dedicated to the memory of former faculty member Dr. Jay Boland, the ETSU Undergraduate Student Research Symposium showcases and celebrates scholarly achievement by ETSU undergraduate students. The Boland Symposium is sponsored by The Honors College and open to all undergraduate students who wish to give an oral presentation of their research prospectus, preliminary results, ongoing studies, or final results. This Symposium is intended to provide undergraduates the opportunity to discuss and receive feedback and ideas from others. Undergraduate student researchers will present a non-competitive 15-minute oral presentation/art display/creative performance or a research-in-progress presentation. -
Hiring Undergraduate Student Researchers
The Office of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities promotes and advance student research in the natural sciences, health sciences, social sciences, humanities and creative arts. Faculty can hire a student for an APS or FWS Research Discovery Position and provide hands-on opportunities for student to learn exiting skills. -
