Timothy Loman joined the Department as Assistant Director of Athletic Bands in 2024. His duties include assisting with the direction of the ETSU Marching Bucs and directing the Buccaneer Brass Basketball Band. He is currently a doctoral candidate in wind conducting at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, where he served as an Associate Instructor for the Department of Bands. He received a Master of Music degree in wind band conducting from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in 2021. His primary conducting teachers were Dr. Rodney Dorsey and Dr. Stephen Peterson.
A native of Virginia, Mr. Loman grew up in the Shenandoah Valley where he attended
James Madison University in Harrisonburg, VA. He received a Bachelor of Music degree
in music education in 2012 and his primary instrument is clarinet. He was actively
involved with the ensembles of the School of Music at JMU, including serving as a
drum major for the Marching Royal Dukes. After graduating, he served eight years as
a counseling director for the JMU Summer Band Camps Concert Band Camp; a week long
program for high school students.
From 2012-2019, he was the Band Director at Magna Vista High School in Ridgeway, VA. Mr. Loman built a highly competitive and well rounded band program which included concert band, marching band, jazz band, chamber ensembles, pit orchestra, percussion ensembles, pep band, drumline, and color guard. He arranged music for the marching band and remains on staff as an arranger.
Mr. Loman has diverse musical interests in addition to conducting. As a trumpet player, he has performed in jazz bands and pit orchestras. As a music director, he has coached vocal ensembles for musical theater productions, led pit orchestras, and directed the Sounds of Indiana Barbershop Chorus. His doctoral minor field was in music theory and he has experience arranging for marching band and concert ensembles. He holds memberships in the College Band Directors National Association, the National Band Association, the National Association for Music Education, the Society for Music Theory, and the Pi Kappa Lambda Honor Society.
