Master of Music in Performance
The ETSU Master of Music in Performance provides students with the opportunity to refine their performance ability while also expanding their knowledge of repertoire and pedagogy. Students will receive one-on-one instruction with our outstanding applied faculty and have the opportunity to participate in our award-winning ensembles, opera theatre program, and chamber groups.
The Performance area is divided into four area concentrations that provide specific coursework:

Audition repertoire Requirements Listed Below
BrassAll instruments:
- Two contrasting movements from standard concertos or sonatas. The movements can be from the same composition or separate compositions.
- Three orchestral excerpts from the standard repertoire
- Sight-reading
- Two etudes (select from books below)
- Trumpet – Charlier, Bitsch
- Horn – Gallay (op. 27) or Kling (40 Studies)
- Trombone – Bordogni/Rochut, Blazhevich, Bitsch
- Euphonium – Rochut, Voxman or Tyrell
- Tuba – Bordogni/Rochut, Tyrell or Blazhevich
WoodwindsClarinet:
- Two contrasting solos from different style periods (single movements from multi-movement pieces are acceptable)
- Two contrasting orchestral excerpts from the standard repertoire
- Sight-Reading and scales as requested
Flute:
- Mozart: Flute Concerto in G K.313, Exposition
- Two contrasting solos from different style periods (single movements from multi-movement pieces are acceptable)
- Two contrasting orchestral excerpts from the standard repertoire
- Sight-Reading and scales as requested
Saxophone:
- Two contrasting solos (single movements from multi-movement pieces are acceptable), with one having been written after 1980
- Two contrasting Ferling etudes
- Sight-Reading and scales as requested
- OPTIONAL: Demonstration of jazz playing - Solo transcription, jazz etude, OR improvisation
over a standard of your choice
Oboe:
- Two solo works of your choice (Suggested: Concerto by Mozart, Strauss, Cimarosa, Marcello, Handel or sonata by Bach, Telemann, or Saint-Saens)
- Two contrasting etudes by Barret or Ferling
- Standard orchestral excerpts of your choice
- Sight-Reading and scales as requested
Bassoon:
- Two contrasting solos from different style periods (single movements from multi-movement pieces are acceptable)
- Two contrasting orchestral excerpts from the standard repertoire
- Sight-Reading and scales as requested
StringsViolin:
- Two Contrasting Movements from the Sonatas and Partitas by J. S. Bach - Must be performed from memory
- First or last movement of a standard concerto - Must be performed from memory
- An etude, concertpiece, or sonata movement showcasing your musical interests
- Scales and sight-reading
Viola:
- Two Contrasting Movements from the Suites for Solo Cello (arranged for viola) by J. S. Bach - Must be performed from memory

Cello:
- One prelude and one dance movement from the Suites for Solo Cello by J. S. Bach - Must be performed from memory

Double Bass:
- Two contrasting movements of solo repertoire, such a standard concerto, Bach cello suite, or sonata
- Two contrasting orchestral excerpts from standard orchestral repertoire from different styles
- At least two octaves of major and minors scale at quarter note=120, to be selected in the audition

Guitar:
- One piece from the Baroque period (examples: Bach, Weiss, Scarlatti) from memory
- One work from the 19th century (examples: Sor, Giuliani, Giulio Regondi) from memory
- One piece from the 20th century or modern era (examples: Takemitsu, Bogdanovic, Brouwer, Rodrigo, Villa-Lobos) from memory
- Jazz Option: Applicants may choose to substitute one of the required classical pieces above with
a jazz performance. If pursuing this option, the following additional works must be
prepared, all performed from memory:
- A blues tune
- A rhythm changes tune
- A ballad
- A modern jazz standard
- Scales and sight reading
Percussion
Prepare all of the following:
Snare Drum:
- Concert Snare Drum Solo or Etude (Delécluse, Macarez, Peters, Tompkins, or equivalent)
- Sight-Reading
Timpani:
- Timpani Solo or Etude (Delécluse, Carter, Hochrainer, or equivalent)
- Sight-reading
Keyboard:
- Two-Mallet Solo (Bach, Becker, Koshinski, Abe, or equivalent)
- Four-Mallet Solo (Abe, Aldridge, Burritt, Deane, Druckman, Lansky, Reynolds, Schwantner, Viñao, or equivalent)
- Sight-Reading and scales as requested
Mulitple Percussion:
- One multiple-percussion solo (Xenakis, Gordon, Lang, Volans, Stockhausen, or equivalent)
Mini-Lesson:
- 20 minute mini-lesson with an undergraduate addressing snare drum and keyboard skills (repertoire will be provided in advance)
Optional:
- One drumset solo or transcription
- One demonstration of a working knowledge of techniques within a specific non-Western music genre
PianoThree contrasting pieces from memory:
- One original work by J. S. Bach
One complete sonata by Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, or Schubert
One substantial work from the 19th century or later
Sight reading and scales as requested
Vocal
- Four pieces in contrasting styles.
- Only one piece may be in English, and the repertoire must include a minimum of three different languages
- One selection must be an aria from an opera, operetta or oratorio
- Preference for pieces from different historical periods, though not required
